“Burning Ice”- A Buried treasure…

As fossil fuel supplies won't last forever, the demand for energy increases and the whole world is looking for new sources of energy. The solution to earth’s future energy needs is the “Burning Ice”. It’s definitely not the Biodiesel, but another potential untapped energy resource, also called “Methane Ice” or technically “Methane Hydrate”. Huge reserves of natural gas (methane) thought to be twice as large as all known fossil fuel deposits on Earth, are trapped hundreds of metres beneath the earth's oceans. Over millions of years the gas, produced by bacteria feasting on carbon deposits, has been held in ice-like structures called Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrate). To say simply, they are composed of water and highly concentrated methane (better known as natural gas).

The conformational structures are stable because of the very low temperatures and high pressures that exist below the sea bed. Methane hydrates are spread around the world. Deposits can be hundreds of yards thick. Enormous quantities are believed to lie on the United States' continental shelf, including the coast of Georgia and in the Gulf (Middle East). These deposits may become a very important fuel resource in the near future. Researchers estimate that a small area off the South-eastern coast of U.S. may contain methane hydrates equal to 30 times of its own annual consumption of natural gas. The sedimentary methane hydrate reservoir probably contains 2-10 times of the currently known reserves of conventional natural gas. This represents a potentially important future source of hydrocarbon fuel.

"Right now, there are very significant technical and financial challenges facing us before we could exploit this as a resource". Removing the gas is not only difficult but also potentially dangerous. Because methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and has a global warming potential. If large sections of the hydrate fields were to break up, massive amounts of methane could be released to the atmosphere and undersea landslides could cause Tsunamis. In spite, Scientists are looking for safe ways to tap a new and unusual source of natural gas underneath the frozen ground. Until recently, though, hydrates were seen as a drilling hazard. Methane gases trapped in ice were recently drilled by oil giants in United States. The remarkable thing is that when you ignite a piece of Methane Hydrate, it will catch on fire. It's been called "Burning ice". Scientists have recently determined how to safely bring the ice to surface without melting it. Now, scientists from around the world are waiting to conduct their own test on these pieces of strange ice and determine whether frozen grounds contain untapped, clean-burning energy.

நல்ல மாட்டுக்கு ஒரு சுவடு..

Cheap Elephants. Costly goads…

After months of discussion and days of contention the government has finally increased the price of petrol by Rs. 2 and diesel by Re 1. This is just a marginal hike which is not going to affect common man, at the same time it’s the only way to save the oil marketing companies from bankruptcy. As the hike come to effect from midnight of Thursday 14th Feb., its Friday’s hot news in all news papers with columns opposing and defending hike. The worst thing is, on the same day in newspapers we can see a full page advertisement for ‘Fuel Conservation’ sponsored by the Ministry of petroleum and natural gas. It states that even after this price revision, the government has to bear a financial burden of over Rs. 70,000 crore in this financial year.
This being the status, does India need a car like nano, which is going to increase the momentum of fuel demand and depletion? It will also add on the traffic congestions. Infact, traffic problems can be regulated by constructive solutions. It’s not against technological discoveries and invention… Obviously, we need to appreciate TATA for playing a pivotal role in making the poor man's dream come true.
To own this car is a boon but, running it in petrol is definitely a curse for the common man. It’s like buying a cheap elephant and a costly goad. Cheap cars will result in a massive increase in the nation’s consumption of petro products. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent every year for importing petro products. As there is a continuous trend of steep rise in crude oil prices in the international market; a pressure is always being mounted for a hike in the domestic market. Only the common man has to shoulder the burden of increasing prices in petro-products and will find increasingly difficult to keep is car running on the road, it’s a ‘slip between the cup and the lip’. The financial burden for luxury will put down the common man.
Secondly, unless India expends a great amount of money and thoughtful planning on its infrastructure, the nation and its people will find themselves confronted by ever-greater traffic congestion and increased fatalities. The accident rate among cars, however, is the highest in the world. India has about one per cent of the world's cars (some 4.5 million) yet still manages to kill over 100,000 people in traffic accidents each year. This amounts to 10 per cent of the entire world's traffic fatalities. The US, with more than 40 per cent of the world's cars, creates just 43,000 fatalities.
. India is not in a need of cheap cars, cameras, pizzas or burger…but badly in need of cheap food, fuel...water and power. All automobile manufacturers must set to work building cars run in an alternate fuel.
Think out before you hold up a green flag for TATA’s nano…verbum sat spienti…
To finish on a lighter note, NANO - a reach for all…. ………………....troubles in future.
